A celebration that began at the campus trolley station and ended with a festive dinner in Old Town kicked off SDSU’s Homecoming 2010 observance.
Almost 200 SDSU Alumni Association lifetime members, including prominent Aztecs whose faces appear on the Aztec for Life trolley, were on hand for the occasion on Thursday, Oct. 14.
Among the Aztec luminaries appearing at the campus kickoff were:
- Football legend Marshall Faulk
- Baseball great and honorary homecoming co-chair Stephen Strasburg
- Honorary homecoming co-chairs Stephen L. Weber and Susan K. Weber
- Restaurateur Ralph Rubio
All of the campus notables posed for a group photo taken inside the trolley station with the Aztec for Life trolley.
Supporting Aztecs
“It’s great to see the support of all the Aztec alums who came out for this event and I’m grateful to be a part of it,” said Strasburg, who signed autographs and posed for several photos throughout the evening.
Following the brief station photo stop, the party moved aboard the trolley on a non-stop ride to Old Town. That’s where dinner was served in the festive atmosphere of Old Town Mexican Café and Cantina hosted by Aztec booster Herb Lizalde.
Fundraising for athletics and more
A raffle and auction of Aztec gear, including items autographed by Faulk, Strasburg, Aztec baseball coach Tony Gwynn, Aztec football great Brian Sipe and head football coach Brady Hoke, raised more than $2,300 for the Aztec baseball program and the SDSU Alumni Association’s internship program.
A highlight of the evening was lifetime member Lesley Fong’s $675 winning bid for a jersey signed by Strasburg.
“It’s for the baseball program and I love the baseball program,” said Fong, who is an employee of the Aztec athletics department. “Between the coaches and the players, they treat me as one of their own, so I just had to do it. It was a lot of fun.”
The event, sponsored by SDSU Alumni Association corporate partner Liberty Mutual, was one of many Aztec for Life events hosted by the organization as a benefit for its lifetime members.
